In 1984, an application was submitted to include the downtown area of Barbourville, Kentucky, in the National Register of Historic Places.

The name of the historic district was to be the "Barbourville Commercial District," which was to comprise approximately six acres including and adjacent to the city's Court Square.

The application was prepared by Pearson, Bender & Jolly Architects.
The National Register is maintained by the U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service.
The application includes detailed descriptions of 43 properties in downtown Barbourville in 1984. The document describes the commercial district as it relates to the original Layout Map of Barbourville in 1801 when the city was established.
