This anthology focusing on Appalachia was compiled through the cooperative efforts of Union College instructor Linda Oxendine and the members of The History of Appalachia Class in the fall semester of 1988. It was recently given to the Museum by Doug Bargo of Gray, Kentucky.

Linda Oxendine Douglas recently noted that she was helping her father, the late Sherman Oxendine, while Union College teacher John Taylor was on a sabbatical leave.

The class was primarily attended by education majors. It was a mandate at the time that Union College education majors take an Appalachian course either in history or sociology.

The purpose of the project, as described in the anthology's preface, was "to provide the future teachers of Appalachia with a handbook of Appalachian culture and heritage to support their own teaching curriculums."

The work was "lovingly dedicated" to Sherman Oxendine. "His lively support and love for Appalachia made this class possible. All Appalachian teachers need to know their own heritage and how to use it in a positive way in the classroom."

The anthology's cover sheet features a boy with his dog looking off into the mountains. It was drawn by student Renee Mills, a member of the History of Appalachia Class.
